VIBRATORY CONTAINMENT UNIT HEATED TO ENHANCE ACID ACTIVITY

This newly developed system consists of a vibrating chamber, acid, and specialized media acting in harmony to rapidly remove metallurgically bonded protective coatings from turbine airfoils. Conventional coating removal methods consist of alternating acid immersion of work pieces followed by abrasive cleaning to remove oxide smut. These steps are preformed separately at a high cost of handling and acid containment.

Our system improves upon this traditional method by simultaneously vibrating piecse, media and acid in the vibratory chamber. The media constantly supplies fresh acid to the work piece surface while simultaneously cleaning the surface of reaction by-product. This approach reduces acid use, minimizes work piece handling, and preserves the underlying dimensional features.
